NordicTrack produces some treadmills that verge on the $3,000 high-end price range, but the company is better known for producing budget-priced machines like the T5 ZI. Although this model was discontinued, at the time of publication this relatively petite, inexpensive, folding treadmill can still be found secondhand or in some retail outlets. If you're looking for a low-price option, this machine may work for you.
Motor
At first glance the T5 ZI's 2.8 hp motor appears to well exceed the recommendation of a 1.5 to 2.0 continuous horsepower motor for running workouts. But the T5 ZI's motor isn't listed as continuous horsepower, so there's no way of knowing whether it can maintain the 2.8 hp output for long periods -- as a continuous horsepower-rated motor can -- or if the 2.8 hp rating only represents its peak power output for short periods of time.
Specs
The T5 ZI is capable of a maximum belt speed of 10 mph, and adjusts between a 0 percent and a 10 percent incline. The 20-inch-by-55-inch belt area is adequate, although tall users may feel cramped. The T5 ZI has a maximum user weight capacity of 325 lbs.
Features
The T5 ZI doesn't have an in-console cooling fan, but is otherwise well-equipped, particularly for a treadmill in the well-under-$1,000 price range. It comes with eight calorie-goal workouts, eight time-goal workouts, a cushioned running deck and an MP3 player input jack. The basic control console comes with a "RaceTrack" display that shows your progress around a virtual 1/4-mile track, and handgrip heart rate monitors integrated into the handlebars. The T5 ZI is also compatible with iFit workout cards. The iFit workout cards, purchased separately from the treadmill, each contain several weeks of preprogrammed workouts to help you vary your treadmill workouts.
Price and Warranty
When discontinued, the T5 ZI had a retail price of about $899. However, NordicTrack and other fitness-equipment manufacturers regularly offer exercise machines at steep, constant discounts, and the T5 ZI regularly sold for $600 or less. When purchased new, this treadmill comes with a lifetime frame guarantee, a 25-year motor warranty and one year of parts and labor coverage.
Storage
The NordicTrack T5 ZI's deck folds against the console when not in use, reducing the machine's footprint. You must adjust the treadmill to the lowest incline setting before lifting the deck to its folded position for storage. You must also be able to lift at least 45 lbs. to raise the treadmill deck, which does not come with the hydraulic lift assist you'll find on more expensive models.
