Though most people eat clams that are baked, boiled or prepared in a soup broth, the popular shellfish can also be cooked on a grill. Preparing and selecting clams for grilling is similar to any other cooking method. You always want to clean the clams thoroughly and remove any potentially bad clams before grilling. Some people find grilled clams flavorful enough to eat alone, but you can also add a sauce for extra taste.

Step 1

Set the grill to medium heat.

Step 2

Rinse the clams under running water and scrub them with a stiff brush to remove dirt. Throw out any clams with cracked or fully open shells. The shells of living clams should close and tighten when tapped.

Step 3

Place the clams on the grate once the grill is heated.

Step 4

Close the grill lid and allow the clams to cook until they pop open, usually no more than 10 minutes.

Step 5

Remove the clams from the grill using tongs. Set the clams on a plate or serving platter and eat immediately.

Tips and Warnings

  • Clams must be cooked to a temperature of 145 degrees, according to the Food and Drug Administration. Discard any clams that don't open after being cooked.
