Most healthcare providers instruct patients to consume a clear liquid diet before a colonoscopy. During the procedure, the doctor examines the intestinal lining and screens for abnormalities including polyps, scar tissue and abnormal growths. Food is often eliminated to allow the gastrointestinal tract time to clear residue and waste from your body. A laxative and enema are often also used to clear the digestive tract. When unsure what food or liquids to eat before your exam, discuss your concerns with your medical doctor.
Timing
A clear liquid diet begins several days before your exam day, depending on your doctor's suggestions. Though the actual exam itself only takes about 30 minutes, prepping your bowels for the procedure takes more time. Often several hours before your colonoscopy, no food or liquid is allowed to be consumed.
Drinks
During the diet, all liquids that are transparent and in liquid state at room temperature are allowed. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, the fluids do not need to be entirely clear, but you do need to be able to visually see through them. Powder based-beverages such as instant fruit mixes and teas are allowed. Water, plain or flavored with lemon or honey, are included on the diet and keep you hydrated. Fat-free chicken or beef broth as well as consomme are included. Both hot coffee and tea are allowed, but must not contain milk or creamer. Johns Hopkins states liquids such as milk, citrus nectar, and cream-based soups are not clear enough to be included on the diet.
Solid Items
Surprisingly, some foods are included on the diet. Gelatin may be consumed in its solid form because the food is actually liquid at room temperature. The sweet dessert turns to liquid once consumed. Ice pops, ice chips and hard candy may also be enjoyed.
Sample Menu
According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, a clear liquid diet may contain up to 1,000 calories a day, enough to keep boost your energy levels. For breakfast, a glass of apple juice, a bowl of gelatin and a cup of hot coffee or tea may start off your day. Lunchtime may consist of a bowl of hot chicken broth, bowl of gelatin and a glass or two of juice. Repeat the same menu at dinner and enjoy a ice pop for a dessert treat. Don't forget to vary your gelatin flavors for variety.
