10th Planet Jiu Jitsu is the brainchild of grappling legend Eddie Bravo. Bravo is best known for submitting the famous Royler Gracie at a grappling competition and serving as a commentator for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu is an offshoot of the grappling art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, or BJJ.
10th Planet History
Bravo is an unorthodox grappler. Although he studied traditional Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Jean Jacques Machado, he was influenced by mixed martial arts competitions such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship, which led him to focus exclusively on submission wrestling without BJJ's trademark gi, or kimono. The gi is used in BJJ to control an opponent and submit him as it allows you to secure firm grips. Without the gi, many BJJ competitors struggled to control an opponent. Bravo used his wrestling background to work a system of controlling an opponent using grips such as head and arm control, overhooks, underhooks and body locks.
10th Planet Style
10th Planet Jiu Jitsu focuses on wrestling grips to control an opponent, as well as other concepts pioneered by Bravo. The system emphasizes flexibility in the legs and hips. While many of the techniques he popularized, such as the twister, gogoplata or his system of grips, are not original, it is the system he put in place that makes them effective. His system of no-gi grappling was designed with mixed martial arts in mind, using the legs to control your opponent in unusual ways such as the rubber guard or the lockdown half guard.
Rubber Guard
The signature technique of 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu is the rubber guard. This guard system is used in place of the traditional closed guard and requires extreme flexibility in the legs. The default position is known as mission control. From underneath your opponent, you break his posture by pulling down his head, before you bring one leg high over his shoulders to lock him in position, securing the position by holding your shin with your opposite hand. From this position, you have one hand free to strike if you are in mixed martial arts competition, or to help set up submissions.
The Twister
The twister is the signature submission of the 10th Planet school and Bravo. It was used successfully in the UFC by Korean grappler Jung Chan-Sung, who said he learned the technique by watching videos of Bravo. It is a move from freestyle wrestling, where it is known as the wrestler's guillotine, but is considered extremely unorthodox in BJJ and submission wrestling. The technique is set up from a modified side-control position. Facing your opponent's legs, you hook his top leg with your own before rolling over him and grabbing his other leg. From there, you need to pass his arm before securing his head and neck, pulling it toward you and submitting him by twisting his spine.
