Is Lipton Citrus-Flavored Green Tea Good for You?

Lipton offers several varieties of citrus-flavored green tea. This flavor is available as a regular tea bag, as a "To Go" powder mixture, as a regular bottled iced tea and as a diet bottled iced tea. Although each citrus-flavored green tea shares some of the same nutritional benefits, the specific nutrition facts vary depending on the product. Always check the nutrition label of your specific product to determine the most accurate nutrition information.

Nutrition Facts

Each 8-oz. serving of the regular bottled Lipton Green Tea with Citrus iced tea contains 70 calories, 0 g of fat, 20 mg of sodium, 18 g of sugar and 0 g of protein. It is the only Lipton Green Tea with Citrus product that contains calories or sugar. The diet version of the bottled iced tea does not contain any calories or sugar, but has 25 mg of sodium. When prepared as instructed, 8-oz. of the Lipton Green Tea To Go Citrus has no calories, sodium, carbohydrates, sugar or protein. The Lipton Green Tea with Citrus tea bags also contain no calories, fat, sodium, sugar or protein, but each serving does provide 10 mg of potassium. None of the Lipton Green Tea with Citrus products offers a significant amount of vitamins or minerals.

Caffeine

All of the Green Tea with Citrus flavored products contain caffeine. Both types of bottled iced tea beverages contain 11 mg of caffeine per serving. The tea bag provides 25 mg of caffeine, while the "To Go" powder mix contains 15 mg of caffeine when prepared as directed. While these amounts are significantly lower than coffee, black tea, energy drinks and many sodas, you should still monitor your overall caffeine intake when consuming these products. Getting more than 500 mg of caffeine daily may cause adverse side effects, including insomnia or sleep problems, gastrointestinal upset, irritability or anxiety, a rapid or irregular heartbeat, headaches or muscle tremors.

Flavonoids

Flavonoids are present in some of the Lipton Green Tea with Citrus products. While more research needs to be done, it is possible that these flavonoids may produce a number of health benefits. This includes the suppression of tumor growth and the prevention of blood clots. Flavonoids may also have anti-inflammatory properties. While the bottled iced tea products do not contain a significant amount of flavonoids, the "To Go" powder offers 80 mg of flavonoids per serving and the tea bags offer 110 mg of flavonoids per serving.

Considerations

While the Lipton Green Tea with Citrus tea bags may seem healthier than the other Lipton Green Tea with Citrus products, many people add additional ingredients when preparing a hot cup of tea at home. Adding milk, sugar, honey or other sweeteners to the tea may significantly alter the overall nutrition of the beverage.
