Ankle Protection for Downhill Mountain Biking

While recreational mountain bikers often ride on paved paths and wooded trails, downhill mountain bikers participate in adrenaline-pumping races on steep, carved-out courses. When riding at breakneck speeds, even the slightest mistake can result in a painful collision with a fellow competitor. There are a variety of ways to keep your ankles protected during downhill runs.

MTB Shoes

The MTB shoe comes in a variety of styles to accommodate the multitude of riding disciplines. While some downhill mountain bike shoes have a midtop design, others feature a high-top construction that covers the bones of your ankles. The inner lining of the downhill mountain biking shoe is padded with high-density foam for increased protection and comfort. According to Vital MTB, top-rated downhill shoes have a durable sole made from high-grade rubber. High-end downhill shoes feature a rigid outer shell that can withstand the sharp edges of the pedals.

Pedals

Downhill mountain bikes are outfitted with a set of specialized pedals. The downhill MTB pedal comes in a flat and clipless design. Both the flat and clipless pedal help prevent your downhill shoes from slipping, which in turn decreases the likelihood of ankle injuries. Flat pedals feature a series of protruding knobs for increased traction. According to REI, clipless pedals have a retention spring that holds your shoes in place.

Protective Pads

One of the easiest ways to keep your ankles protected while downhill mountain biking involves wearing a set of lightweight pads under your socks. Ankle pads made for downhill mountain biking often feature an elastic sleeve that helps to provide a snug yet comfortable fit. Most downhill mountain bike pads have an ABS-plastic insert that covers the bones of your ankles. The only downside to the protective ankle pads is that you cannot wear them comfortably under a pair of high-top mountain bike shoes.

Ankle Braces

If you prefer to ride in high-top mountain bike shoes, opt for a set of ankle braces. Ankle braces for downhill mountain biking often feature a slender design as well as a lacing system. The brace is designed to restrict your ankle movement to prevent torn ligaments during a high-speed fall. Most downhill mountain bikers who have suffered previous ankle injuries wear a set of braces. The brace is often equipped with a plastic insert that runs vertically between your heel and ankle for increased protection.
