Obesity is a growing epidemic that is slowly killing Americans. The Weight-control Information Network reveals that 68 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. Processed foods, high-tech entertainment and busy schedules can cause you to neglect your exercise routine. A lack of exercise can lead to many health problems and even be the cause of death.

Obesity

Not getting enough exercise can cause severe weight gain. Obesity is when you have too high of a body-fat percentage. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that 112,000 deaths among U.S. adults are associated with obesity each year. When your body has too much fat, it has to work harder and is under greater stress. Obesity can be conquered by getting regular exercise to maintain a healthy weight.

Heart Problems

A lack of exercise can lead to fatal heart problems. Your likelihood of developing heart problems drastically increases, specifically for coronary heart disease and heart attack. Coronary heart disease develops when the arteries become clogged with cholesterol, which leads to an insufficient blood flow and reduced oxygen to the heart. Not getting enough exercise can be one cause of this heart problem. With regular exercise, you can reduce your weight and not place such a great demand on your heart.

Diabetes

Being inactive, or leading a sedentary life, increases your risk for developing diabetes. Your lifestyle choices trigger the onset of diabetes. The American Diabetic Association explains that two of the main triggers for diabetes are a poor diet and an inadequate amount of exercise. Exercise allows you to control your weight and boosts your good cholesterol levels, which helps prevent diabetes.

Benefits

Adding exercise into your life can improve the quality of your life. Exercising improves your blood circulation, helps you maintain your weight and prevents bone loss. Exercising can also increase your energy levels and even improve your mood by releasing stress and tension. Other benefits of exercise include helping you fall asleep faster, enhancing your self-esteem and increasing your muscle strength.
