Garlic is not only a great tasting spice that can be added to a variety of foods such as salads, soups and main dishes, but it is also very beneficial for your health. The old wives tale that garlic can keep the vampires away can in some ways be applied to what garlic may do for bacteria. The bulbous vegetable not only helps the immune system, according to chemist Shane Ellison in his book, "Over the Counter Natural Cures," but it is also purported to fight off bacteria ranging from colds to infections, particularly when taken in pill form.

Identification

A yeast infection is most often referred to as overgrowth of yeast, a naturally-occurring fungus in the body. When too much yeast grows in the body, it can cause negative symptoms, particularly in the vagina, on the tongue or on the skin, according to Dr. James Balch in his book, "Prescription for Natural Cures." Itching, burning, soreness and discharge are common complaints. Conventional medicine tends to back only the exterior manifestations of yeast infections, such as previously noted, while alternative practitioners believe yeast infections impact the whole body, particularly digestion. Garlic pills are one purported treatment recommended by many of these practitioners.

Purpose

According to naturopathic doctor Tori Hudson, ND, garlic pills are one of the best things to take for yeast infections, note the editors of Prevention Health Books in "Nature's Medicines." This is due to its antifungal and immunity-boosting effects. Garlic is like a natural antibiotic, killing the yeast and other bacteria. Because garlic is indiscriminate against bacteria, it is a good idea to eat foods that contain probiotics such as yogurt and sauerkraut to replenish these beneficial bacteria.

Studies

The Prevention Health editors note several studies that indicate garlic is helpful in fighting yeast infections. One study found that animals who had yeast infections and were given a solution of aged garlic extract showed no signs of a yeast infection after two days, while the animals not given the solution still did. Another study found that two garlic capsules a day are enough to protect against yeast in humans. Hudson recommends taking enteric-coated capsules with 4,000 mg of allicin-alliin.

Considerations

It is important to see your doctor if you believe you are suffering from a yeast infection, as you may actually have a different ailment. Also, taking the proper steps to eliminate a yeast infection as soon as possible is important for your overall health, and a trained health care professional can help determine the best course. It is best to take a multipronged approach to treating a yeast infection, including diet, exercise and stress reduction. Make sure you are not allergic to garlic before using it for treatment.
