Jogging is a simple and inexpensive exercise program, and it can be done at your current fitness level without having to purchase a gym membership or special equipment. To begin a walking or jogging program the only thing that is needed is a good pair of supportive running shoes. If you are a a beginner, start off exercising three times a week, working up to 30 minutes. Schedule a visit to your local doctor before beginning any exercise program.

Heart Health

Heart Disease is currently the No. 1 cause of death for women and men in the United States. For health promotion, the American Heart Association recommends exercising a minimum of three times a week for at least 30 minutes. According to the AHA, cardiovascular exercise has been shown to decrease both risk of heart attack and stroke.

Stress Reduction

Exercise provides a healthy way to deal with daily stress instead of turning to smoking, alcohol, drugs or overeating, which can actually add additional stress and be harmful to the body. Cardiovascular exercise can decrease levels of stress hormones in the body, improve immunity, produce sound sleep and restore emotional balance.

Mood Improvement

Cardiovascular exercise can lessen depression and anxiety symptoms by releasing brain chemicals such as endorphins and neurotransmitters that make you feel good. In a 2005 study published in the "American Journal of Preventative Medicine," research showed aerobic exercise decreased symptoms of mild to moderate depression. Exercising with others, such as in a walking or jogging group can also provides healthy social stimulation as well.

Increased Bone Density

Bone density is the measure of mineral density in your bones. Performing weight-bearing exercises such as walking, jogging or lifting weights can increase bone density, balance and strength, and decrease risk of osteoporosis and age-related falls and fractures.

Burns Calories

Jogging burns 10 calories per minute. Exercising for 30 minutes three times a week can up to 3,500 calories in one month. Cardiovascular exercise also elevates your metabolic rate by causing your body to continue to burn additional calories for several hours after you stop exercising.
