What Does "NXT" Stand for in Wrestling?

NXT is a wrestling show made by World Wrestling Entertainment. The term NXT is an abbreviation of "next." The show chooses which athlete will be the next to become part of one of the two main brands of the WWE. At the time of publication, there have been four seasons of NXT, with a fifth season in the works. The format of the show has changed from season to season, but the main goal is for contestants to win matches or polls.

Season One

The first season of NXT saw eight superstars compete for a WWE contract and the right for a shot at the WWE title. These superstars included Wade Barrett, David Otunga, Justin Gabriel, Heath Slater, Darren Young, Skip Sheffield, Daniel Bryan and Michael Tarver. Each superstar was paired with a main roster mentor, who showed them the ropes of becoming a WWE superstar. Ultimately, Wade Barrett won.

Season Two

The second season of NXT also featured eight superstars. These competitors were Kaval, the winner, Michael McGillicutty, Alex Riley, Husky Harris, Percy Watson, Lucky Cannon, Eli Cottonwood and Titus O'Neil. This season saw a slight variation in the rules: The competitors were ranked both by polls and matches won. McGillicutty and Harris went on to join the Nexus stable, and Alex Riley teamed up with The Miz for several months.

Season Three

Whereas, the first two seasons of NXT featured male participants. season three was an all-female season. The season originally began airing on SyFy; however, due to ratings and the movement of the Smackdown brand to SyFy, the season was switched to webcast only. The winner of season three was Kaitlyn. The remaining competitors included Naomi, A.J., Aksana, Maxine and Jamie. This season also saw the reward for winning greatly reduced. Kaitlyn received just a WWE contract and was not given an immediate shot at the WWE Diva's Title.

Season Four

The fourth season saw a return to the male-only format; but, like season three, had only six competitors. The winner was promised a tag title shot with the pro who was their tutor during the course of the season. Ultimately, Johnny Curtis won, which should have allowed him and his mentor R-Truth to receive a shot at the WWE tag titles; however, this win was seemingly forgotten as WWE began running a different major storyline for R-Truth's character. The other cast members of season four included Brodus Clay, Derrick Bateman, Byron Saxton, Conor O'Brian and Jacob Novak.
