Martial arts are sometimes known as fighting arts. Both Kung Fu and Tae Kwon Do fit into this category. However, they have distinctive origins and employ differing techniques, and flow and movement change between the two sports. If you are considering studying either Kung Fu or Tae Kwon Do, talk to your doctor to make sure the practice of martial arts is right for you.
History
Kung fu originated in China around 2800 B.C., while Tae Kwon Do is a newer form of martial art that has roots in Korea. Since Kung Fu is the older of the two practices, many of the movements found in Tae Kwon Do are adaptations of Kung Fu and other martial arts. Although both are considered competitive sports, Tae Kwon Do is represented in the Olympic games and, at the time of publication, it is currently one of the most commonly practiced martial arts, according to the RecSports Division of Student Affairs at the University of Florida.
Flow
The focus of Kung Fu is on hand movements, even though the sport does employ some kicks as well. In contrast, Tae Kwon Do centers around kicking, but includes some hand movements. The body motion of Kung Fu is circular and smooth. Watching a Kung Fu competition can look like Chinese dance. Tae Kwon Do exhibits harsher movements that do not have the same soft tone to them as Kung Fu. With Tae Kwon Do, you see chops and kicks that are abrupt instead of flowing.
Matches
The variance in motion and technique shows in competition. In Kung Fu, fighters can use kicks, hand thrusts and throws to cut down an opponent. In Tae Kwon Do, the basic moves inlcude kicking to the upper body. You see fewer throws and less grappling in a Tae Kwon Do match, although they are allowed. As two Kung Fu artists compete, you will notice they lead with the hands, to grab or punch, for example. Tae Kwon Do fighters will often lead with the legs forward and hands pulled in toward the body.
Weapons Use
Kung Fu uses a bevy of weapons as part of the sport. Instructors provide methods for up to 18 different weapons when teaching the techniques of Kung Fu. These can include swords, chains, shields or staffs, just to name a few. The implements in Kung Fu can also be custom-made by the fighter. Tae Kwon Do, on the other hand, uses no weapons as part of the competition. Fighters work only with controlled body movements.
