Adding apples to your gravy recipe gives your gravy a sweet and tangy taste and enhances the flavor of your meat. Old-fashioned apple gravy combines bits of apples, cider and juice in place of milk to create gravy that pairs well with chicken, pork and beef. When making apple gravy, choose different varieties of apples to change the taste of your finished product. Be adventurous and try paring your gravy with potato pancakes or red cabbage.

Apple Gravy with Apple Cider

Step 1

Mix 2 tbsp. ham, roast or chicken drippings with 3 1/2 cups of apple cider and 1 cup of peeled diced apples in a large saucepan. Heat the cider over medium heat.

Step 2

Mix 5 tbsp. of flour with 1/2 cup of cold water. Blend the flour and water until you make a thin paste.

Step 3

Pour the flour paste into the saucepan. Stir the liquid constantly until the gravy begins to thicken.

Step 4

Remove the apple gravy from the heat. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Apple Gravy with Apple Juice

Step 1

Mix together 2 tbsp. ham, chicken or roast drippings, 6 tbsp. flour and 1 cup of peeled and diced apples in a large saucepan. Heat the apples and drippings over medium heat.

Step 2

Add 1 1/2 cups of water, 1 1/2 cups of apple juice, 1 1/2 tsp. salt and 1/4 tsp. pepper to the apples and drippings. Stir the apple gravy continually until it starts to thicken.

Step 3

Cover the gravy and simmer for 2 to 3 minutes over low heat. Remove from the heat and add additional salt and pepper if necessary.
