Bromelain is an herbal medicine produced from pineapples. The enzymes in bromelain are used to treat a variety of health conditions, including arthritis and inflammation. Although bromelain is generally considered safe, it may cause mild side effects, including stomach irritation. Similar to any other health supplement, always consult a qualified health practitioner before taking bromelain supplements.

Stomach Irritation

Gastrointestinal upset is one of the commonly reported side effects of bromelain. Symptoms may be variable and can include stomach and abdominal discomfort, upset stomach, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, explains MedlinePlus. More severe symptoms, such as irritation of the stomach lining or the development of gastrointestinal ulcers, are not commonly reported after taking bromelain.

Allergic Reactions

Allergic reactions to bromelain may occur in rare cases. The symptoms of an allergic reaction include itching or irritation of the skin such as hives or rash. Additional possible symptoms include runny nose, wheezing, difficulty breathing and asthma-like symptoms, warns the University of Maryland Medical Center. In extreme cases, severe swelling of the face or throat may dangerously restrict breathing. If you experience difficulty breathing after taking bromelain, call emergency medical services immediately.

Additional Side Effects

Bromelain has blood-thinning properties and may increase the risk of excess bleeding or bruising. The risk of excess bleeding is increased following surgery and in people with pre-existing bleeding disorders. Women taking bromelain supplements may find they have a heavier than normal menstrual flow, reports the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Drug Interactions

Because bromelain may act as a blood-thinner, it may cause dangerous interactions with anticoagulant medications. Taking bromelain at the same times as blood-thinning medications such as warfarin, ibuprofen or aspirin, may greatly increase the risk of severe bleeding and bruising, warns MedlinePlus. Additionally, bromelain may cause your body to absorb higher levels of antibiotics than normal, which may increase the risk of side effects resulting from those antibiotics.
