During a hockey game, offensive and defensive strategies are constantly in play to deal with the opposition's strengths and exploit their weaknesses. The dump and chase is an offensive strategy that is practiced more in the North American game than in Europe, and although it isn't always exciting, it can be quite effective.

Premise

The dump and chase requires shooting the puck into the offensive zone and then chasing it in rather than carrying the puck across the blue line in a standard rush. The idea is to get to the puck before the opposing defensemen and set up a scoring opportunity.

Key Points

The puck is generally shot into the corner so the goalie doesn't just shoot it back out, and it is shot lightly so the forward have the opportunity to get to it before the opposing defensemen. You must dump the puck in from the opponent's side of center to avoid icing, and it is important to get the defensemen to turn around each time to chase the puck. If the defensemen do get to the puck first, a clean but solid body check helps knock them off the puck.

Benefits

While the dump and chase won't likely keep many fans on the edge of their seats, it does offer benefits to the team doing the dumping. If performed correctly, the dump and chase tires out and wears down defensemen, leaving them vulnerable to being beaten in one-on-one situations later in the game. If you body-check the defensemen on each dump, it might make them a little wary about going into the corners, which could give you the extra step you need. The dump and chase also results in turnovers and face-offs in the offensive zone.

When to Use

If your team employs a physical style of play, the dump and chase is likely an effective strategy because it allows your players to hit and bang in the corners. If the opposition's defensemen make it difficult for your forwards to penetrate the zone, it is also a good choice to get them turned around so you have a chance to blow past. Opposing defensemen who log a lot of minutes will tire faster if you use the dump and chase against them.
