ADHD, short for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a behavioral condition that affects attention spans, impulse control and hyperactivity levels. According to The Healing Center Online, around 35 percent of children in the United States suffer from ADHD. Although doctors commonly treat this disorder with stimulant medications, several homeopathic supplements can help relieve ADHD symptoms. While these supplements are natural, they can still be dangerous in large doses. Consult a homeopathic specialist or your doctor before treating ADHD with any homeopathic supplements.

Considerations

While clinical trials have found mixed results when treating ADHD with homeopathic remedies, ADHD sufferers, their families and homeopathic specialists report that carefully prescribed homeopathic supplements often offer some relief of symptoms. According to Dr. Lewis Mehl-Madrona's article for The Healing Center Online, one study had some children take homeopathic supplements while other children took placebos. Those taking homeopathic remedies exhibited far less ADHD symptoms than those who did not. It is very important that you find a qualified homeopathic specialist with experience treating ADHD before taking any homeopathic treatments.

Stramonium

Stramonium, or Datura stramonium, also called thorn apple, is a plant used for some time to treat sudden outbursts of violence and rage, notes Herbs 2000. According to Dr. Mehl-Madrona, stramonium is often effective in treating ADHD sufferers who have extreme hyperactivity, violent tendencies and episodes of rage. This homeopathic remedy might also help those who have excessive fears, such as fear of the dark or of being alone. Stramonium is highly narcotic, so consult a well-trained homeopath before taking this supplement or giving it to your child.

Cina

Cina, or Artemisia cina, also called the wormseed plant, might also be an effective homeopathic supplement for ADHD. Dr. Mehl-Madrona reports that cina seems particularly beneficial to those who are also physically aggressive, excessively fidgety or extremely restless. Cina is also a possible treatment for ADHD sufferers who are contrary and don't like people touching or looking at them. Cina might also help calm capricious children who demand things and then violently refuse what they initially requested. Adequate research on using cina to treat ADHD symptoms does not exist, so talk to a specialist before using cina.

Hyoscyamus Niger

Hyoscyamus niger, commonly called the henbane plant, seems to help ADHD patients who are overly exuberant or have poor impulse control. These people talk excessively, act like the class clown, love shocking others and always want to be the center of attention. They often exhibit highly sexualized or obscene behavior and jokes, notes Dr. Mehl-Madrona. Hyoscyamus niger might help to relieve these symptoms as well as settle down aggressive outbursts. Large doses of Hyoscyamus niger can be harmful, so consult a specialist before taking it.

Tarentula

Tarentula is a homeopathic supplement made from the wolf spider, or Lycosa tarentula. Herbs 2000 indicates that tarentula supplements might be most beneficial for ADHD sufferers who have very high hyperactivity levels and easily become over stimulated. These people typically suffer from severe mood swings and might be prone to malicious and destructive behavior, such as playing practical jokes on others. Tarentula might also effectively treat those who are always impatient and easily distracted. Talk to a specialist before using this supplement.
