Making your own dried fruit, such as blueberry and apple bits, has several benefits. You can control the amount of sweetener you add to the fruit -- in this case, omitting the sugar and choosing honey, instead. You can dry your fruit in the oven without using preservatives. And, drying fruit is a smart way to save fresh fruit and still enjoy it when it's no longer in season. Store your apple blueberry bits in an air-tight container for up to one month.

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 225 degrees F.

Step 2

Toss the apple pieces with the blueberries in a mixing bowl.

Step 3

Add the lemon juice and honey and stir until the fruit is coated. Sprinkle in cinnamon if you like.

Step 4

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spread the fruit out on the sheet so that it is not clumped together.

Step 5

Bake at 225 degrees F. for two hours.

Step 6

Remove the fruit from the oven and let it cool to room temperature before using or storing the blueberry and apple bits.

Tips and Warnings

  • Use blueberry apple bits for a take-along snack, add them to cereals or toss them into a salad. Use firm, fresh apples to make your apple bits. Green apples such as Granny Smith will yield a more tart dried apple. Although, this recipe uses apples and blueberries, you can also use the same preparation for grapes, apricots, pears and other favorite fruits.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 cup chopped Red Delicious or Granny Smith apples
