Hair fusion is a technique for attaching hair extensions to the head. It involves fusing small groups of natural and artificial hair strands together with an adhesive. Proponents say this method is longer-lasting than other hair extension methods and makes a person's hair appear longer and fuller.

Hair Template

Between 20 and 50 strands are typically attached at a time. The stylist uses a plastic template and pulls a small portion of her client's hair through. The extensions are glued to this hair. Hair must be extremely clean and free of conditioner or problems can occur when the stylist bonds the extensions to the real hair.

Warm Fusion

Silica is one substance used to bond hair when a stylist uses a warm fusion technique. With proper maintenance, extensions done with silica can last six months to one year. Silica attachments come in three different sizes. Small attachments are good for hiding hair damage and give the most coverage. Medium attachments are best for people who have shoulder-length or longer hair. Extra small are the least visible and provide the most versatility in terms of styling hair.

Cold Fusion

A newer technique uses cold fusion. This method uses a keratin-based polymer and hair is attached at the root. This technique works especially well on fine hair. This method is gentler on the hair than methods that use heat, and advocates of cold fusion say it results in more natural-feeling hair. Extensions attached with the polymer can last four to six months.

Not for Everyone

Fusion is not recommended for people who are undergoing chemotherapy, or who have thinning hair or are balding. Fusion can stress hair that is weakened. Fusion will not weaken normal, healthy hair. People who cannot use fusion still have options for hair extensions, including netweaving. In this technique, the stylist creates a foundation with a weaving net and then sews hair extensions on.

Time Frame and Cost

Hair fusion takes several hours to complete. Fast stylists can attach a pack of hair in two to two and a half hours. Some people require more than one pack of hair. Hair fusion extensions are expensive. They can cost $250 to $1,500. The type of fusion you choose can affect the price. For example, with silica the medium option costs the least and the extra small option costs the most. You will also have to pay for hair extension removal.

All Types of Hair

People of all races and hair types can use hair fusion. For example, people of Asian, African American, Latino, Caucasian, Native American and European descent can all use hair fusion. People with all lengths and textures of hair can use fusion as well.

Hair Care

People with hair fusion often go to a salon to have hair shampooed and set, or return every three months to have their extensions removed and reinstalled. People with the extensions can shampoo, condition them and style them. You should also go to the stylist to take off the extensions so that the bonds holding the artificial and real hair together are properly removed. Removing the extensions takes just as much time as applying them.
