The U.S. Department of Agriculture food pyramid recommends that consumers eat two to four servings of fruit each day. Unfortunately, most Americans don't meet these guidelines. A 2009 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention quoted in U.S. News and World Report notes that 67 percent of the U.S. population eats less than two servings of fruit a day. Fruits contain vital nutrients such as calcium, potassium, magnesium and a wealth of vitamins to help boost your immune system and keep you healthy. Mixing fruit smoothies is a delicious way to work the fruit you need into your daily diet.
Yogurt Smoothie
Step 1
Add the water, yogurt and ice to the blender.
Step 2
Chop the fruit into small pieces. The smaller the pieces, the more easily your blender can liquefy them. Add them to the blender.
Step 3
Set your blender to "Liquefy." This ensures that the blender will thoroughly process the fruit, leaving you with very little, if any, pulp.
Step 4
Turn on the blender. Blend the smoothie until the fruit is fully liquefied and the smoothie is the consistency of a thick milkshake.
Iceless Smoothie
Step 1
Add the chopped fruit and water to your blender and blend the mixture until the fruit is liquefied.
Step 2
Add 1/2 can frozen drink concentrate to the blender. The frozen drink concentrate serves as a substitute for the ice, keeping your smoothie cold, while also giving your drink added flavor.
Step 3
Blend the mixture on "High" for one minute.
Step 4
Pour the smoothie into a glass and serve.
High Protein Smoothie
Step 1
Add the fruit, milk and ice to the blender and blend the ingredients for one minute or until the ice is well crushed.
Step 2
Set the blender to "Liquefy." Blend the mixture for one minute or until the smoothie reaches the consistency you prefer.
Step 3
Add the yogurt, protein powder and wheat germ to the blender and blend the smoothie for an additional 10 seconds.
Step 4
Pour the smoothie into a glass and enjoy.
Tips and Warnings
- You can use any type of fruit you like in a smoothie. Experiment with several different fruits at once to find the combinations you like best. Buy flavored yogurt that complements the flavor combinations of your fruit for added taste. Canned fruit is just as nutritious as fresh fruit and is often softer and easier to blend, making it an ideal addition to your fruit smoothie. For extra calcium, substitute milk for water in your smoothie. Top off your smoothie with whipped cream for a fresh, healthy dessert. If you do not have a blender, a food processor will work just as well for mixing smoothies. While you can use any flavor of frozen drink concentrate when making your smoothies, fruit-based flavors complement the fruit flavors already present in the drink.
- If you're using fruit with seeds, take care to remove all of the seeds before adding the fruit to the blender.
