How to Cook a Whole Chicken in the Microwave With Tupperware

Cooking a whole chicken in the microwave may be a foreign concept to many people. However, Tupperware has several dishes -- including the Oval Microwave Cooker and large Heat ‘n Serve containers -- that make this possible. The finished product is comparable to chickens cooked in the oven, without being rubbery or dried out -- and the best part is that your chicken is ready in under 30 minutes.

Step 1

Prepare your chicken for cooking by rinsing it thoroughly and removing the neck and gizzards from the cavity. You can use these for gravy, or discard them.

Step 2

Dry the chicken thoroughly using clean paper towels.

Step 3

Rub the chicken with olive oil or any oil of your choice. Season well with salt, pepper and any spice rubs or seasonings that you like. Be sure to season the inside of the chicken as well.

Step 4

Place the chicken into the container of your choice and secure the lid. When using an Oval Cooker, it doesn’t matter if you place the chicken breast side up or down. If using a Heat ‘n Serve container, place the chicken breast side down into the deep container and use the shallow container inverted on top as a lid.

Step 5

Cook the chicken in your microwave for six to seven minutes per pound if using the Oval Cooker. For a 3- to 4-lb. chicken, this is 18 to 24 minutes. When cooking a chicken in the Heat ‘n Serve dish, microwave for nine minutes before flipping the chicken breast side up, then microwave for another nine minutes.

Step 6

Remove the chicken from the microwave and check the internal temperature using a food thermometer. The temperature should register 165 degrees Fahrenheit when done, and the juice from the chicken should be clear.

Step 7

Remove the cooked chicken from the Tupperware container and allow it to rest for at least five minutes before serving. This allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat instead of running out on your cutting board, leaving a very dry chicken.
