Belly dance is a low-impact cardiovascular exercise that also helps strengthen muscles, especially the back and abdominal muscles. Belly dancing is also very sensual, which may help boost confidence and self-esteem. Belly dance classes may be offered through private dance studios as well as gyms and fitness centers and may teach different styles of belly dancing such as Turkish, Persian or Greek belly dancing.
Beginner
Beginner belly dance classes tend to focus on basic movements such as hip and chest shimmies, traveling steps, arms paths, isolations and undulations. Belly dancing moves are taught in a step-by-step format with easy-to-follow instructions, skill drills and practices and helpful pointers and tips from the instructor. Each class is led by a trained instructor and is typically accompanied by music. As your skill levels improve, you may also learn advanced arm paths, intricate undulations and layered hip movements.
Intermediate
Much of beginner belly dance classes tend to focus on little to no movement. Intermediate belly dance classes introduces complex traveling and floor combinations as well as how to use accessories such as a veil or finger cymbals. Other belly dancing skills and techniques that may be taught include how to make an entrance, spins, hand placement, turns and tricks, musical interpretation as well as emotional expression. Compared with beginner classes, these lessons may be set at a quicker pace.
Advanced
Advanced belly dance classes tend to focus on combining all the skills you have learned into one choreographed performance. Other belly dancing skills that may be taught include how to perfect your technique, complex traveling steps and advanced layering techniques. Some classes may provide lessons on other styles of belly dancing or a more in-depth look into the art of belly dancing music. Some classes may even require that students perform their belly dance routine in front of the class or at a scheduled performance.
Other Considerations
Belly dance class sizes tend to be small, although private lessons may also be available. What is taught at the belly dancing class is determined by the instructor; therefore, there are no set guidelines as to what is taught per each class. Many gyms and fitness centers also feature exercise classes that incorporate belly dancing moves into a workout routine. You may also be able to find belly dancing instructional DVDs.
