Football coaches and players commonly say, "Defense wins championships," referring to the importance defense plays on the outcome of every game. A strong defense contains fast and strong athletes who are fundamentally sound. By following a few defensive pointers, you can improve your overall football performance to help your defense and team.
Tackles
Missed tackles are the primary reason for ball carriers running for extra yards. But you can prevent the extra yards with proper tackling form and technique. Good tackling form starts with a proper pursuit angle that puts you in position to make the tackle. After you approach the ball carrier, lower your hips while keeping you eyes on the target and drive your shoulder into the opponent's waist. Wrap your arms around his body and continue driving him to the ground.
Assignments
Although there are 11 players on the field, every player has a specific responsibility. Missing an assignment can result in a big play or touchdown for the opposing offense. You can prevent these big plays by understanding your assignment before the snap. Your assignment might change according to the defensive scheme or offensive alignment so every gap is adequately covered.
Escape Techniques
During the course of every play, the offense will make blocks to make a running lane for the ball carrier. Your goal, however, is to attack the blockers, escape the block and then tackle the ball carrier. Learning proper escape techniques allow you to evade the blocker while advancing up field to cut off the runner. You can escape the block by using your arms and body to avoid contact. Practice escaping the blocker using drills incorporated into the normal practice routine.
Training
Improving your overall defensive performance can be achieved through a strength-and-conditioning program. A general program focuses on footwork, agility, strength, speed and power but can be customized to match the individual requirements of different ability levels and positions. For example, a defensive lineman might want to focus on maximal strength and quickness off the line while a defensive back might want to work on footwork, agility and acceleration.
