There are two methods of hanging a punching bag: on a free-moving stand or by attaching it to a primary support beam in the ceiling. A stand can get in the way of 360-degree access to the bag when training. Hanging the bag on a support beam is more cost-effective. While some lightweight speed bags don't need a beam support, it is wise to protect the bag and structure from damage and yourself from injury by properly securing all punching bags.
Step 1
Climb a ladder in the approximate area where you want to hang the bag. Locate a primary support beam in the ceiling. A stud finder uses tones to find the solid beams hidden in the ceiling. Adjust the position of the ladder to work comfortably under the beam.
Step 2
Measure the bracket holes on the beam, marking them with a pencil. You can use a simple eyebolt screw or buy a special punching bag mount that revolves without twisting.
Step 3
Drill starter holes where marked on the beam. A starter hole uses a drill bit just a fraction smaller than the screws required for the job.
Step 4
Screw in the mount with at least 1 1/2-inch screws. You may need two or four screws, depending on the mount model. An eyebolt only needs to be twisted into the beam.
Step 5
Test the mount by shaking it with your hands to make sure it is securely fastened.
Step 6
Get help from a friend to lift the bag into position under the mount and secure the bag's chain to the mount. Clip it in and release the bag, making sure the mount will hold the bag weight.
Step 7
Test the mount setup by holding the bag and pulling on it.
