The National Institute of Drug Abuse 5 test detects levels of mind-altering substances. If you drive for a living or work for the United States government, you may be asked to take this test. A urine sample is obtained to determine if you have used five types of substances. Usage periods vary by the particular substance and how long the drug or its metabolites remain detectable in urine. SAMSHA-5 panel is now the appropriate name for the test, but it is still commonly known as the NIDA 5.
Testing for Cannabinoids
The drug test detects the presence of marijuana and hashish in urine.
Testing for Cocaine
The NIDA 5 test indicates if the test taker has used cocaine or crack cocaine by any method.
Testing for Amphetamines
This drug test detects levels of amphetamine, speed, Ecstasy and methamphetamine, known as "meth."
Testing for Opiates
The NIDA 5 test detects levels of heroin, codeine and morphine.
Testing for Phencyclidine
The test indicates if the test taker has used PCP, also known as Angel Dust.
Test Limitations
The NIDA 5 test does not test for many drugs that are commonly abused in the United States, including barbiturates, benzodiazepines, semi-synthetic opiates and synthetic narcotics.
