Laser eye surgery is a procedure that uses a beam of light energy to correct vision problems. The surgery can cost thousands of dollars. Modern laser eye surgery has about a 98 percent success rate, but some people do not want to undergo elective surgery due to risks. Several types of laser eye surgery are designed for various issues such as near sightedness, far sightedness and astigmatism so the risks vary with each procedure. If you are considering laser eye surgery you may first want to consider alternatives or learn ways to avoid surgery. Your optometrist can help you decide what is best for you depending on your eye condition and personal situation.

Step 1

Wear glasses. Gone are the days of glasses equals geek. Today there are so many different styles of glasses that can help you achieve any look: sophisticated, sexy, mysterious. While prescription glasses are expensive it is less expensive than surgery to buy a few different frames to add some variation to your wardrobe. Glasses are best for the person who doesn't want to undergo surgery and doesn't like things (contacts and fingers) touching her eyes.

Step 2

Consider contacts. Contacts can be an option for those who don't want to pay for or undergo surgery and do not want to wear glasses. There are different types of contacts. Some you can put in and leave in for an extended period of time. Others must be put in every morning and removed at night. It can seem difficult and monotonous to deal with contacts, but it will get easier with practice. Colored contacts are a fun way to change or enhance your eye color.

Step 3

Improve eye health. For those who don't currently need any eyesight correction, it is wise to do what you can now to avoid the need for laser eye surgery, contacts or glasses as you age. Wear UV protection sunglasses when you are outside. Stop smoking because, according to the "Journal of American Medical Association," those who regularly smoke double their risk of developing macular degeneration (loss of vision with age) particularly in men. Nutrition can also contribute to eye health. Eat colorful fruits and vegetables that include omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, vitamin C and A and antioxidants. Walnuts, salmon and olive oil are also high in omega-3 fatty acids.
