Health and wellness expert Kathy Freston details in her book "Quantum Wellness Cleanse: The 21-Day Essential Guide to Healing Your Mind, Body and Spirit, how you can achieve what she calls "a higher state of wellness" by ridding your diet of "the big five." Freston recommends forgoing refined sugar, alcohol, caffeine, gluten and animal products for 21 days.
The Big Five
During the three-week cleanse, the "big five" should be avoided to help eliminate craving triggers and give your body a break from artificial stimulants and depressants. Replace the big five with healthy foods and follow a vegan diet.
Conscious Eating
Conscious eating is a critical aspect of the 21-day vegan detox. Freston believes that by being aware of the food that is consumed and understanding the effect it has on animals and the environment, you will improve your physical and spiritual well-being.
Recommended Food
Food recommendations during the vegan Quantum Wellness cleanse include fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts, seeds, brown rice, quinoa, lentils and soy products. A typical breakfast may include steel-cut oatmeal with berries and agave nectar or two pieces of gluten-free bread toasted and topped with natural peanut butter. Baked tofu and brown rice or vegetable stir fry is recommended for lunch. Dinnertime meals may consist of black bean burgers or lentil soup with salad. Additional vegan mealtime dishes include tempeh salad, grilled portobello mushrooms and wheat-free pancakes.
Acknowledgments
Freston acknowledges that the recommended menu may be difficult for those who do not already follow a vegan diet, but she insists that the cleanse is not about depriving yourself, but rather replacing poor food choices with healthier ones.
Results
After three weeks on the cleanse, Freston claims that you should expect increased energy and slight weight loss, and you will have discovered "a way to eat that aligns you with your inner values of kindness and integrity."
Frequency
Freston suggests that the Quantum Wellness cleanse should be repeated once or twice each year.
Additional Aspects
To achieve what Freston calls "quantum wellness," besides becoming a conscious eater, the author recommends that you also include visualization, exercise and spiritual practice in your daily routine.
Warning
Consult a physician prior to starting any new diet or exercise routine.
