When you have your wisdom teeth removed it can seriously impact your diet. Not only will it affect your ability to chew, you will need to increase your calorie and protein intake to aid in recovery. Immediately after the surgery, you will be limited to mostly liquids and soft foods before you can go back to your regular diet.

Liquids

Drink plenty of liquids, between five and six glasses a day. In order to get more nutrients, try soy milk, instant breakfast drinks or Ensure in addition to water. Avoid smoothies that have granules and can irritate the extraction site.

Proteins

Stick with soft proteins that require little chewing. Try eating cooked fish and eggs. Avoid granola bars or proteins that have small grains which can irritate the extraction site.

Cold Foods

Cold foods can be soothing after surgery. Go for milkshakes, Popsicles, frozen yogurt and ice cream. Avoid frozen treats that have small pieces of candy or fruit chunks that can get lodged in the extraction site.

Soft Foods

There are many different types of soft foods that you can eat after surgery. Try applesauce, mashed potatoes, pudding, steamed vegetables, Jell-O and canned fruit.

Eating Restrictions

Do not use a straw to drink liquids. Flush the extraction site after every meal. Avoid eating spicy foods. Do not ingest hot soup or hot chocolate until is has cooled. Abstain from drinking alcoholic and carbonated beverages for at least 24 hours.
