Omega 3 Fatty Oils for Kids With Attention Disorders

Omega-3 fatty acids are necessary nutrients your body needs to perform certain functions. These fatty acids play an important role in brain function and are necessary for healthy behavioral and cognitive function. Although more research is necessary, omega-3 fatty acids may help in the treatment of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, commonly called ADHD.

ADHD

ADHD is a neurobehavioral disorder that usually affects children and may continue into the adult years. The main symptoms of ADHD are inattentiveness, excessive daydreaming, fidgeting, forgetfulness and difficulty controlling impulses, such as talking and acting without thinking. Although the specific cause of ADHD remains unknown, heredity is likely to play a part in this disorder. Other factors that may contribute to this condition include premature deliver, low birth weight, brain injury, exposure to toxins and tobacco or alcohol use during pregnancy. Although omega-3 fatty acids may possibly provide benefits for children with ADHD, it is not a standard or proven treatment, and no single remedy is the answer for every child with this condition. Most cases require behavior therapy and medications.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

There is no recommended or established dose of omega-3 fatty acids for children. A deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids in the diet can cause numerous symptoms, such as memory problems, depression, dry skin and mood swings. Although your body can't manufacture omega-3 fatty acids, several foods are good sources of these types of lipids. Food sources of omega-3 fatty acids include nut oils, tuna, halibut, algae and salmon.

Benefits

Even though many studies are inconclusive, some research suggests that omega-3 fatty acids may help with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, rheumatoid arthritis and ADHD, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. The studies regarding the use of omega-3 fatty acids in treating ADHD show mixed results, although there is some indication that a deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids may increase the occurrence of temper tantrums and sleep disturbances.

Considerations

Increasing the amount of omega-3 foods in your child's diet provides a safe and reasonable way to supply this important nutrient. Although omega-3 fatty acids may provide benefits for children diagnosed with ADHD, these fatty acids are not a replacement for proven medications. Talk to your pediatrician before starting your child on any nutritional supplement regimen designed to treat ADHD or other health conditions.
