Two-thirds of American adults are either overweight or obese, according to MedlinePlus. With an increasing number of overweight adults comes an increasing number of dieting and weight-loss programs as well. While each program promises successful weight loss, each dieting and weight-loss program has varying approaches as well as differing characteristics.

Weight Watchers

Weight Watchers is a weight-loss program that uses a point system to help you control your portion sizes and overall calorie intake. After signing up for Weight Watchers, you work with a weight-loss consultant to determine how many points you are allowed to consume each day. You may consume a variety of different foods, which are assigned different point values, until you reach your daily points goal.

While on the Weight Watchers program, you also attend regular meetings, where you receive a confidential weigh-in and can connect with your Weight Watchers consultants and peers. Weight Watchers is available online, as well as in-person.

Jenny Craig

The Jenny Craig program involves a diet of pre-packaged, usually frozen, meals and snacks. While following the Jenny Craig program, you are permitted to eat three Jenny Craig meals and one snack per day. You may also consume a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables and some low-fat dairy products.

The Jenny Craig program also offers you access to a personal consultant who can answer your questions, offer you advice and help you stay motivated. Jenny Craig is available online and in-person.

NutriSystem

Like the Jenny Craig program, the NutriSystem program involves a diet of pre-packaged meals. When signing up for the NutriSystem program, you choose a 28-day plan that involves ordering a variety of low-glycemic meals and snacks. The NutriSystem program also offers specialized weight-loss programs for men, women and diabetics. Unlike the other diet programs, NutriSystem is only available online. There are no physical locations.

Considerations

With so many different dieting and weight-loss programs available, it can be difficult to choose the one that is right for you. The Weight-Control Information Network, an information service of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, NIDDK, recommends gathering as much information as you can about each program prior to joining to help narrow your options. Determine what your weight-loss goal is and the average weight loss that each program promises. Calculate the costs of each program and determine which programs are within your budgets. Ask program directors what their qualifications are and what certifications, if any, they hold. Consult your doctor before going on any new diet.
