Figs, which contain no fat or cholesterol or sodium, have more fiber than most other fruits and vegetables and also provide iron, calcium, potassium and antioxidants. Figs are usually purchased dried and packaged for use in various recipes or as a nutrient-rich snack. Fig bread recipes often include nuts, although many of the recipes include fennel seeds. You can make a basic fig bread with nuts, such as almonds, or add dates or another ingredient to make your special fig bread.
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Grease a 1-lb. loaf pan and line the pan with parchment paper.
Step 3
Beat an egg in a bowl until it is light, add sugar to the egg slowly and continue to beat until the mixture is fluffy. The bowl should be large enough to add dry ingredients later.
Step 4
Add buttermilk to the egg and sugar mixture and mix well.
Step 5
Sift together the dry ingredients -- flour, baking soda and salt -- in a separate bowl, and add the dry ingredients to the egg mixture. Stir the mixture gently until all of the ingredients are thoroughly mixed.
Step 6
Add rolled oats, nuts, orange peel and figs to the mixture. You may use old-fashioned or quick oats. After you have folded in these ingredients, add the melted butter and stir well.
Step 7
Bake the fig bread for 50 minutes to one hour, or until the bread is done. Allow the bread to cool in the pan after you remove it from the oven.
Tips and Warnings
- If you prefer a frosting or glaze on your fig bread, make it with 1½ cups of orange juice and one cup of confectioner's sugar, and add some grated orange peal to the top of the cake.
