Lingzhi diet products have been found to contain a number of undeclared pharmaceutical ingredients that cause serious adverse health effects. The U.S Food and Drug Administration released an updated consumer warning on March 20, 2009, yet Lingzhi diet pills and diet tea are still being sold in the United States. According to the FDA, these products are dangerous and you should discontinue their use immediately.
FDA Warning
The FDA released a nationwide alert warning consumers about the dangers of tainted weight loss products, including Lingzhi. The FDA warns not to purchase or consume these products. As of June 2011, the FDA has identified 72 tainted diet products. An FDA analysis of undeclared ingredients revealed that some of these products contain sibutramine, rimonabrant, phenytoin and phenolphthalein, as well as other pharmaceutical drugs, either alone of in combination. The FDA says that in some cases, pharmaceutical ingredients far exceeded the FDA-recommended levels.
Sibutramine
Sibutramine is a prescription appetite suppressant no longer available in the United States. It suppresses your appetite by manipulating the levels of certain brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters. Sibutramine was used for obesity under close doctor supervision. However, it is no longer available in the United States because clinical studies showed it increased heart attack and stroke. It can also cause high blood pressure and rapid heartbeat.
Rimonabant
Rimonabant is not approved for marketing in the United States. It was removed from the market in 2008 following data showing the increased risk of psychiatric disorders in patients taking it. In addition, patients taking the highest dose, which is 2 mg, showed an increased risk of suicide and suicidal thoughts. Patients had no prior psychiatric conditions.
Phenytoin and Phenolphthalein
Phenytoin is a prescription anti-seizure drug. It is only used under doctor supervision. Phenolphthalein was used in over-the-counter laxatives. However, it was removed from the market due to increased cancer risk, after studies suggested it can damage or cause mutations in your DNA.
