Bladder infections -- urinary tract infections or cystitis -- are common bacterial infections that can affect your entire urinary system including your bladder, kidneys, ureters and urethra. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, about 40 to 60 percent of bladder infections recur after treatment with an antibiotic. Eating certain foods may help prevent bladder infections.
Cranberries
Cranberries -- whether in the form of the fruit, juice, concentrate or extract pills -- may help prevent recurring bladder infections. The cranberry is a powerful antioxidant that can help prevent bacteria from sticking your bladder tissue. The University of Michigan Health System recommends consuming 4 to 10 oz. of cranberry juice daily or 400 mg of cranberry concentrate twice daily. Cranberries also can make your urine more acidic, creating a more hostile environment for bacteria.
Water
The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends drinking six to eight glasses of filtered water daily to help prevent bladder infections. Drinking water helps flush bacteria and toxins out of your kidneys through the process of urination. Water also can help dilute your urine. If you have a bladder infection, diluted urine can be less painful to pass.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C can help fight bacteria and support your overall immune system, making it more difficult for you to contract a bladder infection. The University of Maryland Medical Center indicates you should consume 500 to 1,000 mg of vitamin C once or twice per day. Sources of vitamin C include citrus fruits, broccoli, bell peppers, mustard, kale, cauliflower and strawberries.
Fish
Cold water fish -- including salmon and halibut -- are sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help reduce inflammation of the bladder and improve your overall health. The University of Maryland recommends consuming one to two capsules of fish oil or one tablespoon of fish oil one to two times per day.
A Well-Balanced Diet
Well-balanced diets provide your body with essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients -- such as vitamin C -- that help keep your body healthy and functioning properly as well as help your body fight off bladder and other infections. Your diet should include vegetables, lean meats, fiber, olive oil, vegetable oil, plenty of water and fruits, especially those rich in antioxidants, such as cranberries and blueberries. Avoid fried food, red meats, coffee, alcohol, processed foods, refined sugars, breads and pastas. These types of foods contain stimulants and preservatives that can irritate the lining of your bladder, making it more susceptible to infection. They can also increase your symptoms -- such as pain and burning -- should you already have a bladder infection.
