Plain rice is a nutritious side dish, but when you combine various types of rice with seasonings, you get a mix that offers a flavorful variation. Though pre-seasoned rice mixes are available for purchase, making your own mix at home lets you blend your favorite ingredients. Try mixing brown and wild rice with parsley, onion and garlic for a savory combination that will go well with chicken, red meat or fish.
Step 1
Pour 1 cup of brown rice into a pot. Do not rinse the rice before cooking it because much of the rice grown in the United States is enriched with iron, niacin, folic acid and thiamin. Rinsing the rice removes these added nutrients.
Step 2
Pour 1 cup of wild rice into the pot with the brown rice.
Step 3
Measure 2 cups of chicken, beef or vegetable broth and pour it into the pot with the rice.
Step 4
Add 2 tbsp. of butter to the rice and water.
Step 5
Place ½ cup of dried parsley in the pot.
Step 6
Add 2 tbsp. of onion powder, 1 tsp. of garlic powder and ¼ tsp. of dried thyme.
Step 7
Bring the broth to a boil over high heat.
Step 8
Cover the pot and reduce the heat to simmer when the broth boils.
Step 9
Cook the rice mix for 35 to 45 minutes, or until all of the water is absorbed. Stir occasionally while cooking.
Step 10
Fluff the rice with a fork when it is finished cooking and serve immediately.
