At 15, your body is still growing and changing, and you need a diet that gives you enough nutrients to stay healthy as you develop. No matter if you need to lose weight or just maintain it, your diet should focus on nutrient-rich items and properly sized servings. Talk to your doctor before you make any dietary changes, and ask about consulting with a nutritionist if you need help coming up with an eating plan.

Avoid Fad Diets

When you are choosing a diet, it may be tempting to follow the latest fads or the ones that promise the quickest results. However, these are often temporary solutions, since fad diets rarely teach you the habits you need to maintain a healthy weight for life. Furthermore, they can pose some serious risks to your health, as they typically deprive you of key nutrients and calories. Instead of looking for a quick fix, select a diet that includes each of the major food groups and the right amount of calories for your age and goals.

Eat Regularly

Skipping meals can be another common component of a teen's diet, and this can be problematic as well. For example, eating breakfast is essential for kicking your body's metabolism into gear, helping you burn calories and maintain a constant energy level throughout the day. If you skip breakfast or any meal, you will most likely make up for it later when you become really hungry, and you will end up eating more than you ordinarily would. Design a diet that allows for three healthy meals and one or two snacks a day to promote a regulated metabolism.

Include More Fruits And Veggies

French fries, candy and soda may be convenient, but these kinds of food provide little to no nutrition, while typically containing a large amount of calories. Instead of filling up on junk, make it your goal to get at least five servings or fruits and vegetables a day. Produce contains key vitamins and minerals, as well as fiber, which will help keep your fuller throughout the day. Try snacking on frozen grapes or baby carrots, or have some strawberries for dessert. Your diet plan can include a high-calorie treat now and then, but make allowances for it by primarily focusing on healthier, lower calorie foods.

Don't Forget to Exercise

While a healthy diet is essential for controlling your weight, as well as growing properly, do not discount the importance of exercise. Teens need about an hour of physical activity each day, and this can be anything from running to playing tennis to taking a karate class. Working out and eating right go hand in hand, and they can help you stay fit and healthy through your teens and beyond.
