When camping season is in full force and you are trying to plan easy campsite meals, it doesn't get any easier than a package of bratwurst, which can be grilled within minutes. All you need are a hot bed of coals and something to stick into the bratwurst. With simple tools and food supplies, you can make a meal quickly and without extensive preparation.

Step 1

Poke a camp skewer or stick through the middle of the bratwurst.

Step 2

Rest the skewer or stick on a rock or log near the fire.

Step 3

Position the bratwurst near the base of the fire, not over the open flame.

Step 4

Spin the skewer or stick slowly but continuously to cook the bratwurst evenly.

Step 5

Cook the bratwurst until it's completely warm throughout. This can take as long as 30 minutes, depending on the size of the bratwurst and the heat of the fire.

Tips and Warnings

  • Wrap the bratwurst in aluminum foil to attract more heat and cook faster. If using a stick, choose one at least 3 to 4 feet long and green. A shorter stick places you too close to the fire and a brown stick catches fire too easily.
  • Use only precooked bratwurst for cooking over a campfire. Uncooked bratwurst are too soft inside and may fall apart.

Things You'll Need

  • Camp skewer or stick
