When you're pregnant, you're required to eliminate a variety of items from your diet, including caffeine, alcohol, and sushi, to ensure the health and proper development of your baby, says the American Pregnancy Association. Though apple cider vinegar is usually not included on this list, there may be reasons why you want to avoid it.

Common Attributes

Apple cider vinegar is a kind of vinegar or acetic acid distilled from -- you guessed it -- apples. It's not harmful to consume and is used in cooking a variety of dishes. There are no direct links to health issues in pregnant women related to drinking or consuming apple cider vinegar.

Cravings

Cravings are common during pregnancy. Tart and vinegary foods are especially desired, says the American Pregnancy Association, including pickles and lemon. A specific craving for apple cider vinegar in and of itself, however, may be a sign of a condition called pica, that occurs in some pregnant women with nutritional deficiencies or mental illnesses.

Possible Benefits

Consuming apple cider vinegar can be beneficial to pregnant women. In fact, having vinegar while pregnant can prevent anemia without causing side effects, according to a study published in "Trace Elements in Man and Animals" in 2002.

Vinegar is Not an Abortifacient

Some people believe that apple cider vinegar can be used as an abortifacient, but this is simply not the case. According to Planned Parenthood, consuming vinegar to try to trigger a miscarriage is ineffective and driven by folklore alone, not science.
