Getting by a defenseman with the puck one-on-one in hockey is a difficult task much of the time. Forwards are often knocked to the ice as they try to deke out the defense, or have the puck poked away. Head fakes and fancy stick handling techniques are often used by forwards to get through for a scoring chance, and then again to beat the goalie. The toe drag is one move hockey players use to maintain puck control when space is limited on the ice.

Step 1

Hold your stick with both hands toward the top of the shaft and your arms extended out to your forehand side.

Step 2

Roll your wrists so the toe of your blade is pointed down and touches the ice over the far edge of the puck.

Step 3

Pull the puck in toward your body as soon as the opposing player makes a move toward the puck.

Step 4

Roll your wrists toward the inside as the puck reaches your nearest skate to cradle it on your blade. Dip your body away from your defender and continue through with the puck.

Tips and Warnings

  • Try to mimic the on-ice movement when practicing a toe drag off-ice. Find a smooth surface with a real puck or practice puck. Use the toe drag when in alone on the goalie by faking a shot to the far corner and pulling the puck in to deke to the other side.
