While it is impossible to spot reduce, or lose weight from a specific area of the body, you can trim your waist and hips by shedding excess body fat and performing exercises that tone the stomach, glutes and thighs. You can do this with a combination of cardiovascular training to burn calories, which aids in weight loss -- and strength training, which firms and tightens muscles. As your muscles develop, the area will get smaller. This is because muscle is more compact than the equivalent amount of fat.

Step 1

Perform cardiovascular exercise most days of the week. The University of Michigan Health System recommends at least 30 minutes of cardio most days of the week to lose weight. Choose an activity you enjoy, such as brisk walking or cycling, so that you stay motivated for your workouts.

Step 2

Complete ab exercises each day. While most body parts benefit from a day of rest between workouts, the abs respond better to daily activity. Choose several exercises that work the abs in different ways, such as the bicycle and crunches. Spend about five minutes performing ab exercises each day.

Step 3

Work the glutes and thighs to shrink your hips. Exercises like squats, deadlifts and lunges are effective at toning the hip area. Perform three to four sets of eight to 10 repetitions of each exercise, and wait 24 hours between workouts to give your muscles time to recover.

Step 4

Cut calories. The most effective workout won't shrink your hips and waist if you eat more calories than you need. Watch portion size and cut out extras such as soda and sweet treats to shed excess pounds and quickly lose inches from your waist and hips.
