Glucerna Meal Plans

Brands of dietary supplements from Abbott Nutrition include EAS protein and sports nutrition supplements, Body-for-Life weight control and sports nutrition supplements, PediaSure and Similac infant formula and Glucerna dietary products for individuals with diabetes. Glucerna meal plans may help you manage your blood sugar levels, but get your doctor's approval before you start following the Glucerna diet.

Background

Glucerna meal plans are designed to help you control your blood sugar if you have diabetes. The plans are low-glycemic, to avoid spikes in your blood sugar levels after you eat a meal or snack, and meals and snacks are small and frequent to help stabilize your blood sugar. Losing weight may help you control your diabetes if you are overweight or obese, and your Glucerna meal plan should include an appropriate number of calories for your weight goals. Glucerna warns that its meal plans and products are only designed for and tested on individuals with diabetes.

Products

Glucerna daily meal plans include one or more Glucerna products. Your breakfast or snack often includes a serving of Glucerna cereal, which are crunchy whole-grain flakes with almonds, strawberry or raisins. Glucerna makes snack bars and smaller mini-snack bars that you can use for snacks or as dessert substitutes, and some of the flavors are oatmeal raisin and cinnamon bun. Glucerna snack shakes, in chocolate or vanilla, are alternatives to snack bars. Other Glucerna products are meal bars and meal replacement shakes.

Nutrition

Glucerna meal plans are available from 1,500 to 1,900 daily calories. They are high in protein and dietary fiber, and low in cholesterol-raising saturated fat and high-glycemic carbohydrates, such as added sugars. Glucerna products contain artificial sweeteners such as sugar alcohols, sucralose and calorie-free acesulfame potassium. Glucerna products are fortified, and the meal plans are high in vitamins and minerals such as vitamin E, vitamin C, the B vitamins, calcium, chromium and iron.

Sample Day

Glucerna meal plans include three meals and snacks per day. Possible breakfasts include cereal and milk or yogurt, or a Glucerna bar and milk. Snacks may include whole-grain bread and peanut butter, a Glucerna snack bar or shake, trail mix or yogurt. Lunch options include sandwiches on whole-grain bread with a lean protein, salads, fruit or pudding, and dinners such as fish, pasta, salad, wild rice, vegetables and milk. Glucerna provides recipes for its meal plans at the 1,500 and 1,900 calorie levels.
