With the rise in popularity of mixed martial arts, there has been a growing interest in the fighting style known as Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Developed by the Gracie family in Brazil, it is a hybrid of kodokan judo and wrestling. This self-defense system employs grappling techniques such as chokes, armlocks, leg locks and strikes to subdue any opponent, regardless of size or weight. Learning Brazilian jiu-jitsu requires dedication, self-discipline, conditioning and practice. Many outlets are available for you to begin learning this martial art.
Step 1
Enroll in a Brazilian jiu-jitsu class. As mixed martial arts continues to enjoy worldwide notoriety, more classes and schools are offering training in the Brazilian fighting style. If you are interested in learning the basics, many YMCAs and gyms offer classes. Schools dedicated solely to mixed martial arts and Brazilian jiu-jitsu are also available in most communities. Check online or in your local phone book for listings of schools near you.
Step 2
Purchase or check out a book. If you are the type of person who doesn't feel comfortable trying something new around strangers, there are many books available on the art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. While many are informative on the style and history of the art, you will want to find a book that gives clear and understandable instructions on performing techniques. Books with illustrations are best when trying to understand exact moves and holds. Find a partner to help you, as it is difficult to practice locks and holds by yourself.
Step 3
Buy or rent a DVD. Because the Brazilian style of self-defense is so popular, you can find a library of videos that covers all aspects of the sport, ranging in levels from amateur to expert. Learning from a DVD is another option if you are not comfortable around new people.
Step 4
Find a website online. The Internet offers a variety of sites dedicated strictly to Brazilian jiu-jitsu training. If you are just starting out, make sure to choose a site that focuses on basic techniques. You can find sites that offer detailed instructions along with video demonstrations to help you understand the movements and training required to learn Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
