Calorie counting is an important part of losing weight and avoiding unwanted weight gain. According to the American Heart Association, you should aim to burn as many calories as you take in through physical activity and daily activities. For men, the number of calories you should consume on a daily basis largely depends on your age and level of physical activity.

Males Ages 19-30

The American Heart Association breaks recommended caloric intake down based on a man's age and his current activity level. For a male ages 19-30 who leads a sedentary lifestyle -- light physical activity mainly for performing daily tasks -- 2,400 calories should be consumed on a daily basis. For males who are moderately active, 2,600 to 2,800 calories are recommended. Moderately active indicates that a man includes regular physical activity in his routine. This is equivalent to walking about 1.5 to 3 miles daily. Active males should consume 3,000 calories daily. An active male leads a lifestyle that includes walking more than three miles per day along with regular physical activity to perform daily tasks.

Males Ages 31-50

There is a slight difference in the number of calories younger males should consume compared to those in the 31 to 50 age bracket. Males between the ages of 31 and 50 who lead a sedentary lifestyle should consume 2,200 calories daily. Males who lead a moderately active lifestyle should consume between 2,400 and 2,600 calories per day. For active males between the ages of 31 and 50, caloric intake should reach between 2,800 and 3,000 calories per day.

Males Ages 51 and Older

Older males typically require the fewest calories of all adult males, as indicated by the American Heart Association. Sedentary males over the age of 50 should consume 2,000 calories daily. For males over 50 who participate in moderate active, caloric intake should be between 2,200 and 2,400 calories daily. For active males over 50, the American Heart Association recommends 2,400 to 2,800 calories be consumed on a daily basis.

Considerations

To keep you healthy and allow you to consume an adequate amount of calories, consume a healthy, well-balanced diet. The National Academy of Sports Medicine indicates diets should include fruits, vegetables, lean meats, low-fat dairy products and whole grains. If you are trying to lose weight, the MayoClinic.com recommends cutting 500 calories from your diet daily. Keep in mind that one pound of fat is equal to 3,500 calories. If you have specific concerns about your caloric intake, talk to your doctor.
