Gum disease, or periodontitis, is a chronic bacterial infection that destroys the soft tissue and bone that support your teeth. In your mouth, bacteria bind with food particles to form a sticky, colorless plaque on the teeth. If you do not remove it, this plaque may lead to tooth loss. Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10, supplements along with daily brushing and flossing may help you treat gum disease. Talk to your health care provider before taking CoQ10 supplements for this purpose.

About CoQ10

Your body requires CoQ10, a vitamin-like substance, to generate energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate molecules, or ATP. In the body, ATP functions like a rechargeable battery in the transfer of energy. CoQ10 may help in the treatment of disorders that limit your cells' energy production, explains Medline Plus. People with gum disease require sufficient energy for the healing and repair of gum tissues, which in turn require sufficient amounts of CoQ10.

CoQ10 and Gum Disease

According to Medline Plus, people with gum diseases may have low levels of CoQ10 in their gum tissue. A 2010 study published in the "Indian Journal of Pharmacology" states that CoQ10 may be used as an alternative medication for the treatment of gum disease. According to these researchers, oral administration of CoQ10 may increase the concentration of CoQ10 in gum tissue and effectively suppresses periodontal inflammation.

CoQ10 Supplementation

As a supplement, coenzyme Q10 is available in several forms, including soft gel and hard shell capsules, mouth rinses and oral sprays. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, rinsing your mouth with 5 mL or 1 tsp. of CoQ10 mouthwash two to three times a day may help you if you have gum disease. Consult your dental professional for the exact dosage of CoQ10 for your condition.

CoQ10 Safety

Like conventional medicines, CoQ10 supplements can cause side effects. The side effects of CoQ10 include loss of appetite, heartburn, vomiting, nausea, dizziness, irritability, increased light sensitivity of the eyes, fatigue and headache. Always consult with your doctor before using CoQ10 supplements
