How to Take Armour Thyroid and B-12 Vitamins

Armour is a brand name thyroid medication that helps balance the production of thyroxine, or T4, and triiodothyronine, or T3, hormones. B-12 is a vitamin that helps produce red blood cells, nerve cells and proteins. Both Armour and B-12 come in swallowable pill form. B-12 is also available in sublingual form, which dissolves when placed under the tongue. According to Drugs.com, there are no known interactions between Amour thyroid medication and B-12 supplements; however, you must always check with your doctor before taking any supplements.

Step 1

Wait at least two hours after eating to ensure your stomach is empty. Dr. John C. Lowe states that you absorb thyroid medication more completely without interference from food. Similarly, the National Institutes of Health states that B-12 combines with a protein in stomach acid called intrinsic factor and an empty stomach helps with absorption.

Step 2

Remove the dosage your doctor recommended from the bottles of Armour and B-12. Get a full 8-oz. glass of water.

Step 3

Swallow each pill individually. This will help you avoid choking and prevent the pills from sticking together in a clump, which will take longer for your body to digest. Drink the entire glass of water to help the medicine dissolve faster.

Step 4

Place sublingual B-12 under your tongue after you take the Armour pills and drink the glass of water if you are taking a liquid B-12 supplement. Do not drink water after taking the sublingual B-12 or it will wash away.

Tips and Warnings

  • Do not eat for at least one hour after taking the medications. This gives your stomach time to breakdown and digest the pills.
