The thick leaves of the aloe vera plant contain a substance that provides the main ingredient in many topical remedies and cosmetic products. This herbal gel shows some promise as an alternative treatment for certain conditions, although there is no evidence that aloe vera plays a role in the treatment of dry hair.
Aloe Vera
Aloe vera grows in many tropical and subtropical climates, such as Latin America and South Africa. Native cultures used aloe vera for thousands of years as a treatment for constipation, skin irritations and burns. This plant goes by many names, including burn plant, miracle plant, plant of life and bitter aloe.
Uses
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, aloe vera gel contains compounds that may help reduce pain and decrease inflammation associated with minor burns. Other possible uses for this plant include the treatment of genital herpes, psoriasis vulgaris, dandruff and constipation, although additional research is necessary to confirm these potential benefits.
Dry Hair
Although dandruff can signal the presence of a dry scalp, dry hair is usually a sign of dryness within the hair shaft. Disorders of the hair shaft may result from poor grooming practices, such as excessive heating during styling or the use of chemical products, including permanent waves and colors, which result in over-processed hair. Nutritional deficiencies may also result in unhealthy hair. Aloe vera is not a customary alternative therapy for dry hair.
Considerations
While treating your dry hair with topical applications of aloe vera probably won't harm your hair or your health, it is unlikely to moisturize your dry hair or serve as a replacement for commercial hair conditioners and moisturizing treatments. Avoid taking aloe vera juice or gel by mouth. Consuming aloe vera can lead to painful cramping and diarrhea. This substance may cause uterine contractions in pregnant women. Hereditary abnormalities and certain diseases may play a role in hair shaft disorders, such as dryness and brittleness. Although aloe vera might not improve the health or appearance of dry hair, gentle hair care and a nutritious diet that contains healthy oils, vegetables and adequate amounts of water may help improve the health of your hair.
