Bacterial growth in the stomach is a frequent cause of stomach aches, ulcers and other digestive upsets. Helicobacter pylori, or H. pylori, is a type of bacteria that may reside in the gut without negative effects. However, if it causes inflammation in the stomach, it frequently leads to stomach pain, nausea, bloating and feelings of fullness after eating small amounts of food. Such symptoms are typically associated with peptic ulcers and other medical conditions. Typical treatment measures involve prescribed medications, but there are herbs that may help decrease stomach bacteria. Consult with a physician to discuss your treatment options and to rule out serious medical issues.

Benefits of Herbs

Herbs are an increasingly common alternative or possible adjunct to prescribed medications for treating stomach ulcers. However, there is little proven scientific research to validate their long-term effectiveness. According to the Mayo Clinic, however, consistent use of herbs and spices provides a variety of bioactive substances to the body for improved nutritional health. In particular, herbs are a source of cancer-fighting antioxidants that may also aid in the prevention of Alzheimer's disease, heart conditions and digestive conditions. Speak with a health professional prior to taking herbs as they may interact with other medications.

Ginger

Ginger is a type of carminative herb, which is the name given to herbs that relieve pain from gas. According to Crohns.net, ginger has properties that help it fight intestinal parasites and aid in the prevention of ulceration of the intestinal lining. Ginger is particularly soothing to the gut and is often consumed as a tea by adding either powdered ginger or a tablespoon of ginger root to a cup of hot water.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a herb or a spice that aids in relieving stomach upsets caused by bacteria. According to BulbHerbStore.com, an excerpt taken from "Nutritional Herbology" indicates that turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties that may treat digestive and reproductive disorders. It is also used as an agent to cleanse the body of toxins and parasites that cause flatulence, constipation, diarrhea and bloating. Chrons.net reports that 1 g of this natural antibiotic daily is most effective.

Garlic

Garlic is an herb that is used for medicinal purposes including treating stomach bacteria. It has shown consistent antimicrobial activity against bacteria, parasites and fungi. Furthermore, its properties may help protect against cancer and decrease high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Chrons.net indicates that approximately 10 g, or three small cloves, of garlic provides an effective daily dose for significant health benefits.
