Diet Treatment for Microscopic Colitis

Microscopic colitis can be a painful condition, particularly when certain dietary restrictions are not met. Although following a diet does not act as a cure, certain dietary guidelines can help alleviate the symptoms of the condition. Be sure to speak with your gastroenterologist before changing dietary habits, and about any concerns you may have.

Understanding Microscopic Colitis

Similar to colitis, microscopic colitis occurs when there is inflammation within the bowel. The difference between this disorder and colitis is that microscopic colitis is only visible using a microscope. This condition is also known as a form of irritable bowel disorder. According to MayoClinic.com, microscopic colitis does not lead to surgery or certain cancers that are associated with other forms of colitis. Symptoms include abdominal pain, fatigue, gastrointestinal upset, and weight loss.

Treatment Options

Microscopic colitis is often treated by alleviating the symptoms, as there is no cure for the disorder. Patients are often given medication to stop diarrhea until the colitis goes into remission. If you are taking medications for other reasons, your doctor may stop or change these medications to be sure the colitis is not a reaction or symptom.

Dietary Changes

The first step to alleviating the symptoms is to avoid foods that can irritate the bowel including alcohol, caffeine, or foods that are high in fat. Some microscopic colitis patients react well to avoiding common allergens such as wheat, dairy, nuts, or soy. When symptoms are present, choosing foods that are low in fiber can often help rest the bowel.

Precautions

Some other conditions, such as celiac disease, can mimic the symptoms or even cause microscopic colitis. Be sure to ask your doctor if this is a possibility for you, and ask him to test you for the celiac antibodies. The test for celiac disease involves simple blood work. Some microscopic colitis patients also benefit from a gluten-free diet, avoiding wheat, rye, and barley.
