Smart Shopping for Pilates Fitness Circles

The Pilates Method is one of the oldest systems of exercise in the Western world. Its creator, Joseph Pilates, was a creative genius, who had the unique ability to create highly efficient pieces of fitness equipment from relatively simple products. The Pilates Fitness Circle is one of the simplest and most versatile examples of his innovative spirit. Rumor has it that he created his first fitness circle from the ring of a keg.

Sometimes referred to as the Magic Circle, the Pilates Fitness Circle is not only versatile, it's portable and affordable. The typical Pilates Fitness Circle measures 13 inches in diameter and is composed of either flexible metal or rubber, and has pads on both sides.

The circle can be used to spice up a Pilates routine. It provides added toning for the inner and outer thighs, the upper body and the core musculature. The compact size means that you can pack itin your suitcase when you go on vacation.

What to Look for

There are a number of factors to consider when shopping for a Pilates Fitness Circle. First off, resistances may vary, so consider your own strength. A flexible ring might not add enough challenge for someone accustomed to lifting weights. In contrast, if the Pilates ring provides too much resistance, you might not be able to execute the movements through their full range of motion.

Most Pilates Fitness Circles have a 13 inch diameter, though there are some that are significantly smaller. While these might be suitable for women with very narrow pelvises, for most people they will not provide enough movement range to be effective. The next thing to consider is whether you want a fitness ring that is made of rubber or one that is composed of flexible metal.

In general, flexible metal Pilates Fitness Rings are more durable than those made of rubber. If you are purchasing rings for a Pilates or fitness studio, metal is usually the better choice. That said, some of the metal rings can be painfully stiff. Make sure that the pads are composed of a softer material. The older Pilates Fitness Circles had pads only inside the circle. The more modern rings feature pads on both the inside and outside of the circle. For upper body work, this is the more ergonomic choice.

Common Pitfalls

With the current popularity of the Pilates Method of exercise, everyone supposedly teaches Pilates and everyone seems to manufacture Pilates equipment. As such, quality is often compromised. Keep in mind that if the ring is too flexible, it will eventually lose the integrity of its shape.

Also, like all fitness products that have some rubber components, keep the Pilates Fitness Circle out of reach of pets and small children.
