Pedal exercisers and stationary bikes provide a low impact cardiovascular workout that involves a pedaling motion. Both machines are available for in-home use. This is where the similarities stop. Pedal exercisers and stationary bikes are different in design, function and features. The one you choose will depend on your fitness level and goals.

Design

A stationary bike is available in a recumbent or upright style. The design of an upright bike mimics a road bike. A recumbent bike semi-reclines; the seat is behind and almost at the same height as the pedals. Because of the seat position and a full back support, recumbent bikes are more comfortable for some users. A pedal exerciser consists of just the pedals supported on a small frame. It does not have a seat. This makes it considerably lighter and more portable than a stationary bike.

Function

A pedal exerciser offers two pedaling options. Sit in a chair and set the pedal exerciser on the floor so you can pedal with your feet or set it on a table and pedal with your arms. Healthcare facilities and clinics use pedal exercisers for rehabilitative purposes. A stationary bike simulates riding a bicycle in the comfort of the indoors. You pedal with your legs without any upper body movement. Most gyms and fitness centers have stationary bikes or you can purchase one for your home. A stationary bike can provide a more intense cardiovascular workout than the pedal exerciser.

Features

Most stationary bikes have an electronic console that offers preset programming and displays your workout data. Pedal exercisers are less high-tech. Some have a small monitor that displays your workout time, distance and speed. Pedal exercisers and stationary bikes have varying levels of pedal resistance. Most pedal exercisers have a tension knob on top of the device. Turn the knob to increase or decrease the resistance. Some stationary bikes have manual resistance, but many offer digital resistance. Press a button on the console to digitally adjust the pedal resistance.

Considerations

Pedal exercisers are lightweight and portable. They help those with mobility issues, joint conditions or other medical conditions to restore base levels of strength and range of motion. Pedal exercisers will not provide the average healthy adult with an intense cardiovascular workout. Stationary bikes offer a low-impact cardiovascular alternative to the treadmill. The American Council on Exercise notes that a stationary bike is a good aerobic workout choice for those with back pain.
