There is no doubt about it, when it comes to getting in shape, a dance fitness program can be a fun and effective workout. According to the American Council on Exercise, dance is a great form of cardiovascular conditioning and also increases strength, balance, coordination and even bone density levels. The best dance workouts get your heart pumping and your feet moving.
Hip-Hop/Jazz Workouts
Hip-hop is a fun freestyle form of dance that imitates what you might find in the clubs or in music videos. Jazz is a more structured style of dance that typically includes leaps and turns across the floor, depending on the class. Both may be considered high/low impact and classes can be found for beginners through advanced fitness levels. Examples of these workouts include Hip-Hop Abs series and Jazzercise classes.
Latin
Latin dance workouts have become increasingly well-known and is easily a favorite among fitness enthusiasts. These workouts stem directly from the Latin culture. The salsa, merengue and the cumbia are all types of Latin dance steps that set the foundation for Latin-inspired workouts. Latin workouts are generally low impact workouts but can be quite intense. Examples of Latin workouts are the wildly popular Zumba classes and Vanessa Isaac's "Brazilian Dance Workout."
Ballroom
Ballroom dance is a collection of partner dance styles as seen on TV shows such as "Dancing with the Stars." When it comes to fitness, however, a partner is not required. Classes are popping up all over to accommodate demand for this style of dance. Without a partner, this class would be considered a low-impact workout, as there are no lifts or jumps, and it is a great style for beginners.
Specialty Workouts
Ballet workouts, African dance workouts, belly-dancing, and hoop dancing are not quite as popular but definitely worth a try. Ballet is a great mind-body workout that can really challenge your fitness level. African and hooping are ways to really discover a new way of moving your body and belly-dancing can help you explore your sensual side.
Considerations
All dance styles are good for both mind and body wellness. When it comes to choosing a dance workout, it's a good idea to consider your personality and fitness level. Consult a physician before beginning any workout program and remember that the best dance workout is one you will stick to for the long term.
