Football-agility drills for high school receivers are designed to improve your footwork and speed while running routes and while running with the ball. In addition to improve your route running, agility drills also will help you increase the amount of separation you can get between you and your defender.
Endurance-Agility Drills
Endurance-agility drills for receivers will help improve your stamina, which will directly improve your agility at the end of long runs. Endurance drills range from long-distance running drills to weighted sprinting drills. In addition, agility drills can be placed at the end of a long running session. At this point, your body will be fatigued, reducing your agility and quickness. Try running 10 routes in this state, pushing yourself to hit your turns quickly and precisely each time.
Short-Route Drills
Short-route drills will improve your route running ability as well as focus on improving your agility. Choose a route that you can perform in under 5 yards, such as a down and out, slant or curl. From here, have a quarterback line up and throw you 10 passes in a row, running the same route each time. Once you finish a route, try a more complicated route while still performing it in under 5 yards.
One-on-One Drills
One-on-one drills will help improve your agility and ability to shake defenders in a one-on-one situation. One-on-one drills can be performed by running a series of repetitive routes against a particular defender. In addition, you can place three cones in between you and a defender, making sure the space between each cone is equal. On your coach's whistle, run to the left of the first cone, right to the second cone and left again to the third cone. Once you reach the final cone, shake your defender and sprint forward. On this sprint, catch a pass thrown from your coach.
Downfield-Agility Drills
Downfield-agility drills will improve your ability to separate from defenders while moving down the field. One downfield-agility drill that can be performed is a five-step turnaround. Run 10 yards and then turn around. Catch the ball, faking left or right to separate from your defender before running toward the end zone. You can vary this downfield-agility drill by increasing the length of the route as well as your particular position from your defender.
