The Sugar Busters diet eliminates processed carbohydrates and refined sugars. The authors of the diet suggest sugar is toxic to the body and must be eliminated. The authors of Sugar Busters promote the diet as a healthy lifestyle instead of a fad diet, as it includes a variety of healthy foods. Vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and most fruits are included on this diet.

Vegetables

Sugar Busters targets high fiber vegetables as a staple in the diet. Starchy vegetables, such as corn, potatoes, carrots and beets, are avoided. High glycemic index foods are avoided on Sugar Busters because they are high in refined sugars. Carrots are listed as a food to avoid because they have a high glycemic index. However, carrots are low glycemic load, which means the amount of sugar in them is relatively low. Sugar Busters diet still recommends avoiding carrots.

Whole Grains

Sugar Busters allows whole grain, high fiber grains in the diet. It eliminates grains such as white bread and pasta, baked goods and white rice. Whole grain breads, pastas and cereals are allowed. Legumes such as black, pinto, kidney and white beans, are also allowed on the Sugar Busters diet because of their high fiber.

Limited Fruits

Fruits are naturally high in carbohydrate. However, some fruits have more sugar than others. Sugar Busters diet eliminates fruits that are highest on the glycemic index. Fruits such as bananas and dried fruit should be avoided, but other fruits are allowed. Sugar Busters does not claim to be a no carbohydrate diet but rather a less sugar diet.

Lean Protein

Animal protein does not contain a significant amount of carbohydrates, so they do not raise blood sugar levels hardly at all. Sugar Busters recommends choosing lean meats, skinless poultry and low fat dairy products for a balanced diet. Sugar Busters diet promotes eliminating saturated and trans fat often found in baked goods and fatty meats.
